This shows how he feels relaxed around the people that respect him more. He does not have to feel bad or embarrassed about who he is or who he is from. He can feel free and normal.
2. "Inside the class, they made up silly songs to humiliate my family, revived the old accusations, and discouraged others from being friends with me." (41)
This is about the discrimination he felt from others growing up. A lot of negative things and setbacks went against him during this time. He felt that nobody but the friends he had recently met could really help him be too comfortable.
